Cracking re-tell lecture

Format:
  • An audio will be played as long as 1.5 to 2.00 mins
  • Preparation time : 10 seconds
  • Recording time : 40 seconds

Re-tell lecture is trickiest part for many test-takers, as the audio is played for more than a minute, hence it becomes arduous to remember every spoken detail. Moreover many the preparation time isn’t adequate for many. Read on this article

Basic Rules

  • Inevitably you need to understand the words spoken by the lecturer. If you are comfortable recognizing words, you are half done for good, and if you cannot, master this skill by watching online English podcasts, check the link below
( it will simply make you ‘ a good listener’, & if you’re already one you can move on to next text)

  • The most important criteria are : Fluency and Pronunciation
(Plz avoid fluency breakages like “ummm, hmmm, ahh”, must be discarded and its must)
  • Record your own voice in audio recorder and assess barriers in fluency, its equally important to Pronounce each and every word correctly. For improving pronunciation, pay attention to the details of every word, if possible break words in to 2-3 parts
:
  • Speak words like Moreover, furthermore, contrary, however etc for smooth transitioning from one sentence to another, it maintains fluency too.
Here’s the example (its written, imagine in speaking)
Lecture:

retellllll

Preparation techniques :
List out main subject and 2-3 key points:
  1. SUBJECT: Problems in Primary teaching
  2. KeyPoint 1 : They are expected to take all subjects
  3. KeyPoint 2 : This affects students
  4. KeyPoint 3 : Teachers should teach what they are passionate for.
Strategy 1:
One you are done with KeyPoints, assemble it to the given format:
(Note : you can use your own format)
The lecture focuses on the issue/topic of _____________________
It is noted at first that __________________________________
Moreover the consequences/motive behind that/explanation can be justified___________________________________________ ( depending on what lecturer said)
lastly, it would be beneficial/worthy__________________________________
Now you can club the key points and templates and focus on speaking with fluency
Strategy 2:
  1. Subject + your own assumptions
  2. KeyPoint 1 + your own assumptions
  3. KeyPoint 2 + assumptions/even ur own opinion ( has to be relevant)
  4. KeyPoint 3 + concluding details
Focus on framing 4 sentences, In first : speak what all the lecture is about, Second sentence : speak on the problem/issues/concerns/additional details, In third sentence, give your own opinion or go with the flow and Fourth sentence: Speak concluding details

For Example:
The lecture is on the issues of primary teaching, as no teacher can master all subjects.Ideally this approach is impractical.  Resulting into negative impacts on students,as student-teacher relationship is very important. Hence teachers should teach only those subjects in which they are passionate about, this will keep them interested.
(The sentences in Italic are an example to the assumptions.)

At Glance:
Use very simple language
Focus on Pronunciation and Fluency
Discard  words like ” Hmmm, Ummm”
Speak as if you are an expert to it ( and if you cant , least is pretend)
Record your own voice and eventually you will recognise your flaws and route for correction.
